Almost three years ago, work was started on the new BMW factory in the north of Leipzig. The aim of the automotive constructor from Munich was to erect one of the most modern production facilities in the German motor industry at this location. An investment volume of around 1.3 billion euros and over 5,000 new jobs – those are the two key figures to signal the significance of this major project. This superlative car plant, with its impressive industrial architecture, is already considered one of the most attractive landmarks in Leipzig.
On 13 May, the new plant was opened by Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, Saxony's Prime Minister Georg Milbradt and the Head of BMW, Helmut Panke, at an official ceremony. Some 650 cars, in particular the 3 series, leave the production line here every day. In recent weeks, the new Leipzig car plant not only made the headlines due to its imposing architecture, but also due to the innovative working methods developed both by the BMW board together with the representatives of the company's workforce, in order to provide the highest possible flexibility and exploitation of the production facilities.
This major project also demanded a high level of flexibility and efficiency from the professionals of the OBO BETTERMANN branch office in Delitzsch, just 20 kilometres from the construction site, who were responsible for the delivery of various systems for electrical installations. The sprawling building complex was equipped with around 100 kilometres of OBO wide span cable trays of various dimensions. The visual area of the central building alone contains five kilometres of painted cable support systems. The installation was made difficult due to the fact that some work had to be carried out at heights of 12 to 14 metres.
